The University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra (UWSO) is one of the largest music societies on campus. There is no music degree offered at Warwick, which we believe creates an inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere to learn and perform music.
If you are interested in joining our Society, you can purchase membership via our Students’ Union page here.
We rehearse weekly in term time on Tuesdays 7:00-9:30pm in the Butterworth Hall or Helen Martin Studio in Warwick Arts Centre. Biscuits are provided in the break every week!
Our string and percussion sections are not auditioned, however a musical standard equivalent to Grade 7 or above is recommended for you to get the most out of the orchestra.
Woodwind and brass musicians can join us for our first rehearsal in Week 1 and our performance in the Music Centre Free Concert in Week 2. To play with us beyond this, you will have to sign up for an audition at the end of Week 2. This consists of playing a piece of your choice and a short passage of sight-reading. If your audition is successful, you do not need to audition again to play with us in future years.
We are conducted by Paul McGrath and Lucy Griffiths, respectively the University’s Director and Assistant Director of Music.
Our string section is mentored by the Coull Quartet, the University’s resident string quartet. They attend most rehearsals, sitting alongside students in the section and offering helpful advice.
Discounted lessons with members of the quartet are available to members of Symphony Orchestra.
We have a wide variety of social events throughout the year, ensuring that everyone is made to feel welcome. These include weekly trips to the Dirty Duck pub after rehearsals, joint events with other music societies such as the annual Music Centre Ball and Music Centre BBQ and circling for Pop several times each term.
We go on an annual tour at the end of Term 2, alternating each year between domestic and international destinations. Previous destinations have included the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Germany and India.
As a part of Warwick Students’ Union, the Society adheres to a constitution which is approved by the Societies Executive Committee and ratified by our members. You can download a copy here.
