University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra (UWSO) is one of the largest music societies on campus. There is no music degree offered at Warwick, which we believe creates an inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere to learn and perform music.

If you are interested in joining our Society, you can purchase membership via our Students’ Union page here.

We rehearse weekly in term time on Tuesdays 7:00-9:30pm in the Butterworth Hall or Helen Martin Studio in Warwick Arts Centre. Biscuits are provided in the break every week!

We have at least one performance each term in the Butterworth Hall with the University of Warwick Chorus. Our full list of upcoming performances can be found on our Concerts page.

From our performance in Term 2 playing Mahler 2 (2019)

Our string and percussion sections are not auditioned, however a musical standard equivalent to Grade 8 is recommended for you to get the most out of the orchestra.

Woodwind and brass musicians can join us for our first rehearsal in Week 1 and our performance in the Music Centre Free Concert in Week 2. To play with us beyond this, you will have to sign up for an audition at the end of Week 2. This consists of playing a piece of your choice and a short passage of sight-reading. If your audition is successful, you do not need to audition again to play with us in future years.

Auditions are on Thursday 10th October from 9:30 – 13:30! Make sure you keep an eye out on how to sign up for these!

We are conducted by Paul McGrath and Lucy Griffiths, respectively the University’s Director and Assistant Director of Music.

For Term 3 2019, we were lucky to be conducted by David Lawrence who is known to be one of the most versatile conductors in the UK! He has conducted the London Philharmonic Choir, Hallé Choir, London Symphony Chorus, the CBSO Chorus (Associate Conductor), and the National Youth Choirs of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Coull Quartet

Our string section is mentored by the Coull Quartet, the University’s resident string quartet. They attend most rehearsals, sitting alongside students in the section and offering helpful advice.

Discounted lessons with members of the quartet are available to members of Symphony Orchestra. Please contact the Music Centre for more information about this!

Pop! tickets go on SALE at 12pm on Thursday 26th September 2019 for Term 1 tickets so make sure you get your hands on them! More details of our socials will be on the Facebook page and Instagram!

We go on an annual tour at the end of Term 2, alternating each year between domestic and international destinations. Previous destinations have included the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Germany and India.

2019/20 Academic year, we are happy to announce we’ll be touring to Rijeka, Croatia🇭🇷 joint with University of Warwick Chorus! We hope you can join us!
